Mayor Hector C. Lora attended the Indian Flag-Raising as Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker

Passaic, NJ - On August 13th, the keynote speaker and chief guest of honor, Mayor Hector C. Lora, joined the Indian American community to celebrate Indian Independence Day. President Raj Rana of  Rana Samaj USA hosted the event alongside Indian American community member Bharat Rana. In tribute to the independence, Mayor Lora raised the flag before Passaic City Hall, symbolizing unity and celebrating cultural diversity.  He expressed, " Every year, we come together to restate support for all communities. Our diversity is our strength. When our communities are united, it makes the most significant difference”. 

Indian Independence Day is celebrated annually on August 15th as a national holiday in India, commemorating the country's independence from the United Kingdom on August 15th, 1947. The ceremony began with Mr. Rana welcoming those in attendance. Mayor Lora was introduced by Mr. Rana, who expressed appreciation for Mayor Lora's commitment to the Indian-American community. Mayor Lora stated, "I can tell you what it's like to stand together with people from India who have come here to fight, sacrifice, and work hard".

Passaic County Commissioner Bruce James and Assemblyman Gary Schaer were also present, expressed their support and appreciation for the Indian-American community of Passaic, and acknowledged its positive impact on the city. Passaic Commissioner Bruce James added, "I have been involved with this community for over forty years. The Indian community has made a significant difference at the Board of Social Services. Over the last ten years, our economic health in Passaic County has been driven entirely by immigrants”. Councilman Schaer expressed, "We are particularly proud of the accomplishments and dedication of the Indian-American community in New Jersey,".

Indian-American community member Bharat Rana expressed gratitude towards the mayor and the council members. Mr. Rana stated, "We are all delighted to have elected officials with us. This city has done so much for our community”. On May 15th, 2022, Mayor Lora expressed his gratitude towards the Indian Community by designating the intersection of Main and Gregory as' India Square.'The Indian American community sang, cheered, and celebrated as the flag-raising ceremony continued.
